Czech Republic border
The days are now shorter and freezing cold, but the spirit of the mission continues to drive the pilgrims forward. The group spent the last two days walking 56 kilometers from Brno to Prostejov, Czech Republic. As they covered one kilometer after the next, they were energized by the graciousness of their hosts and the opportunities to sound the call for climate justice.
The pilgrimage gained increasing attention from local and national media as they traveled through Slovakia and into the Czech Republic. Interviews with newspapers and radio stations were interspersed between presentations at schools and church communities, enabling the pilgrims to speak to a wider audience. They also had encounters with some who disagreed with their cause, which showed the importance of openness and compassionate dialogue.
In spite of the freezing temperatures, the pilgrims were warmed by their experiences of solidarity. In Kuty, their last stop in Slovakia, they were ushered in by residents who walked with them for 11 kilometers before arriving at a feast held in their honor at a local parish. In Brno, their host presented each pilgrim with a candle to light the rest of their way. Let us also stand in solidarity with the pilgrims by holding them in our prayers.
